Your 6-monthly dental examination is essential for so much more than just checking your teeth

You know that it’s recommended that you visit the dentist every 6 months for a routine check-up, but do you know why this is so important, or the other areas of your oral health that we can help you with?
It is often assumed that the only purpose of your dental check-up is for your dentist to check how clean your teeth are. However, we also check each tooth for physical signs of decay, your gums for indications of gum disease and your whole mouth for early symptoms of other harmful conditions, including oral cancer.
“Really nice, friendly people and an excellent level of service. I was getting a filling re-done and barely felt anything. Very impressive.”
– George Britton, July 2015
For this reason, it’s essential that you visit us regularly for your dental examination. However, we can also offer and address a variety of other services, including the following.
If you ever require a filling in your tooth, you needn’t worry about the prospect of having a shiny silver mercury-containing filling visible in your mouth. We offer attractive tooth-coloured composite or ceramic restorations, so you can be sure that your teeth are healthy as well as being protected discreetly.
If any of your teeth are ever affected by injury or decay, there is the possibility that the ‘pulp’ inside your tooth can become infected. This infection is likely to damage the nerve of the tooth inside the root canal, causing it to die and become painful. Root canal treatment is therefore often carried out to ultimately save the tooth.
Patients with a root canal infection may not feel any pain at the start, but if the infection develops into an abscess this can be extremely painful. The treatment itself is carried out under local anaesthetic for your comfort, and involves removing all infection before the canal is cleaned and sealed to prevent any bacteria re-entering.
If any of your teeth are missing, for whatever reason, this can not only affect your confidence but also the way you look, eat and speak. Dentures are a popular and very natural-looking solution to filling any gaps in your smile, as well as protecting your remaining teeth from wear and tear.
At Westerham Dental Care we are able to fit you with the new style flexible dentures, which are even more comfortable than the originals! They also fit around your existing teeth more snugly, meaning that in many cases there is no longer a need for additional clasps to hold them in place.
Crowns and bridges
Unlike dentures which can be removed easily, crowns and bridges are cemented on to your teeth to offer permanent solutions to particular dental problems.
If any of your teeth are damaged, either through injury or previous fillings, we can apply a porcelain or ceramic crown to ‘cap’ your tooth. At Westerham Dental Care these are custom-made by our skilled technicians and can be matched to the colour of your original teeth for an enhanced cosmetic appearance.
Additionally, we may recommend crown treatment to replace a large filling, restore a fractured tooth, cover an implant or root canal treatment, or to attach a bridge.
Bridges, on the other hand, are commonly used to replace one or more missing teeth. The gaps left behind by these missing teeth allow the remaining ones to shift about more than they should, which can affect your bite and eventually become very uncomfortable.
The bridge is fitted onto the adjacent teeth (or implants) either side of the gap, and these teeth are used as anchors to support a replacement tooth inserted into the gap. As with crowns, porcelain or ceramic bridges can be matched to the colour of your teeth.
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that fits over the front surface of your tooth, often used to improve the cosmetic appearance of your smile. They can also hide any damage, chips or gaps in your front teeth.
In some situations, some of the outer enamel of your teeth may be removed in preparation for the veneer application. However, they are held in place with a specially designed and very strong adhesive so provide an excellent quality and long-lasting solution.
Lumineers are a specialist form of veneers which are as thin as a contact lens – sometimes just 0.2mm thick. Despite their size, they are incredibly resistant to everyday wear and tear and can last for over 20 years.
Additionally, the thickness of the Lumineers means that very little preparation of your own teeth is required – even less than standard veneers – as they are able to simply replicate the enamel layer on your teeth.
Westerham Dental Care is one of the few practices accredited to offer Lumineers, and our dentists have extensive experience in recommending and fitting them to a variety of patients.
