Root Canal Treatment

Root canal image

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure needed when the soft inner part of a tooth, known as the pulp, becomes inflamed or infected. The pulp can be damaged due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth. If left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

The procedure involves removing the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth including the canals inside the individual roots, then filling and sealing it with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.

Afterward, reinforcing treatment is often necessary because the tooth is more fragile and prone to fracture. A crown or other restoration helps protect the tooth, restores its function, and improves its appearance. Without reinforcement, the treated tooth might not be able to withstand the force of chewing and could break or become re-infected.
